think it really comes down to whether you need guided navigation or not... Google Maps just does not do that. I really like it though ... it's even better on the iPhone.3.
MGMaps does guided navigation (um, I think) - at least it shows you where you are on the map (and any maps: google maps, hybrid, satellite, Yahoo maps, msn maps, etc.)
Haven't actually tried the guided feature as I live in China and this just doesn't exist yet, at least in English.

I have both installed. Actually, I don't use Google Maps Mobile, I use MGmaps. It has GPS tracking built in (still a free java app).
They're useful in different scenarios. If you're close, and just need to navigate the neighborhoods, I pick MGMaps. If you're driving, I'd take Maps.
